A 4 channel mirror dash cam records from four cameras at once: one facing forward, one facing back, and two that cover the sides. It clips over your existing rearview mirror, and the footage plays back on a screen where the mirror used to be.
The point of a fourth camera is coverage. A front-and-rear setup leaves both sides of your car unwitnessed, and the sides are where most parking lot damage and lane-change disputes actually happen.

The two side cameras are the ones buyers underestimate. On most 4-channel mirror systems, these are small units mounted to the mirror housing that can be pivoted. Aim them outward and they cover your blind spots: the space a car occupies a fraction of a second before it merges into you. Aim them inward and they cover the cabin, including the rear seats.

One thing worth clearing up, because the marketing around it is misleading: β360Β° coverageβ in dash cam listings means four separate camera angles, not a stitched panoramic image. Each channel writes its own file and you review them individually. If you want the flattened bird's-eye view that factory surround-view systems produce, no mirror dash cam does that. Aftermarket 360 parking kits are a different product category.
This is where most buyers make the wrong call, and it happens because the marketing on both sides sounds identical.

Then there's a smaller group: mirror dash cams with 4K front camera , and nearly all of them have only two channels. Excellent front footage, no side coverage at all.

So which matters more? That comes down to one question: what do you need the footage to prove?
If you need to establish who hit whom in a car park, side coverage matters most, and 1080P is enough. You're identifying a vehicle and a sequence of events, not reading a plate.
If you need to prove you didn't run a red light, or that the car ahead reversed into you, or that a truck two lengths up shed its load, you need the front camera, and 1080P usually falls short. At 60 mph you cover 88 feet every second. A 1080P frame stops resolving a plate well before that, and it degrades fast as closing speed rises. A 4K front camera roughly doubles the distance at which a plate stays legible. Neither format reads a plate 88 feet out, but the gap between them decides whether your insurer accepts the clip or asks you for something better.
The trade-off nobody states plainly
Channels buy you coverage. Front resolution buys you evidence. If you can only have one, take the resolution, because an incident you can't prove is the same as having no footage at all.
Detail in a dash cam frame comes from two things: pixel count and how much light the sensor can gather. Pixel count you can read off a spec sheet. The second one you can't, and it's the one that decides whether night footage is usable.
A sensor is the current benchmark for the second part. It's a back-illuminated design, which means more of the light hitting each pixel actually reaches the photodiode instead of being blocked by the circuitry in front of it. In practice that shows up as less noise and more usable color after dark, which is the difference between a plate that's legible and a smear of headlight glare.
Pair that sensor with as wide an aperture as you can get. An F1.8 lens passes roughly twice the light of an F2.4 lens, which matters more than resolution once the sun goes down.
And here's the honest part most reviews skip: on a 4-channel system in this price bracket, the three secondary channels are 1080P, not 4K. That's a real limitation, and it's a deliberate one. Four 4K streams need far more processing, generate far more heat, and chew through storage several times faster. The engineering choice is to spend the resolution budget where it has the highest chance of mattering, which is the forward view.
Read that as a design decision, not a marketing excuse. If you genuinely need 4K on every angle, you're looking at commercial fleet hardware, and you'll pay for it in dollars, heat and card capacity. For documenting what happened around your car, 1080P side and rear channels are enough, and you can verify that yourself by asking what you'd need to see in a side-channel clip. It's almost never a license plate.
Four channels cost more and take longer to install than two. Whether that's worth it depends almost entirely on where your car spends its time.
You carry passengers you don't know, in a car that's your income. You need the cabin covered for dispute protection and the sides covered because door dings and mirror strikes happen at the kerb every working day. A mirror-mounted 4-channel system covers both without mounting a second device on the windshield, and it looks like part of the car rather than a rig.
One practical note: many jurisdictions require you to tell passengers they're being recorded. Check your local rules before you rely on cabin footage.
Long vehicles have long blind spots, and a standard rearview mirror tells you very little about what's behind a loaded van. A mirror dash cam solves the rear view problem at the same time as it solves the recording problem.
Check the rear camera cable length before buying. Most kits are sized for cars and mid-size SUVs; full-size vans and long-bed trucks often need an extension.

Four channels means four angles: front, rear, and two that can cover either your blind spots or your cabin. That's the coverage a two-channel system can't give you, and the sides are where the unresolved claims come from.
But channel count isn't the spec that decides whether your footage holds up. Front resolution and sensor quality are, because the front camera is the one that has to read a plate at speed or in the dark. Buy for the coverage you need, then insist that the front camera be genuinely 4K.
